Abstract
Les figures de répétition ont une vie propre, elles connaissent un avènement, et subissent des phénomènes de mode ou de désaffection. L’approche pragmatique a tout intérêt à tenir compte de cette historicité des formes et des fonctions de la répétition, qui détermine le cadre global d’effets spécifiques. C’est sur l’historicisation d’une figure et de ses différentes réalisations dans le discours littéraire que cette contribution met l’accent, en se limitant à l’étude de la réduplication, ou répétition immédiate et iso-fonctionnelle d’un quelconque segment textuel.À partir d’un corpus original de plusieurs milliers d’occurrences constitué à partir de Frantext, elle montre que cette figure apparaît tardivement dans les textes littéraires, vers le milieu du XIXe siècle, et qu’elle est liée aux expérimentations touchant à la stylisation du parlé. À partir de 1920, elle ne subit plus de changements quantitatifs dans son ensemble, mais elle évolue radicalement d’un point de vue typologique. Trois nouveaux sous-types de réduplication voient le jour et témoignent de la complexification énonciative d’une figure jusque-là cantonnée à des effets d’intensification. L’étude tente d’expliquer cette créativité typologique par des déterminations linguistiques, culturelles et esthétiques.
