Abstract
Il est devenu courant de dire que les Amérindiens attribuent une subjectivité aux objets, et que certains objets, dans des contextes rituels, rendent littéralement présents les esprits et les animaux, et non qu’ils se contentent de les représenter. Une telle identification entre image et prototype, ainsi qu’entre sujet et objet, est souvent vue comme une conséquence de la fluidité qui caractérise les ontologies amérindiennes. Dans cet article, je considère les objets rituels d’un autre point de vue : plutôt que de les voir comme des illustrations de présupposés ontologiques généraux, j’étudie les traits formels qui les rendent rituellement efficaces, avant de demander quelle sorte de subjectivité leur est attribuée. Afin de développer une telle approche, cet article est consacré à l’analyse de masques d’Alaska, de Colombie-Britannique et d’Amazonie.
