Résumé En 2008, les éditions Écosociété publiaient Noir Canada. Pillage, corruption et criminalité en Afrique d’Alain Deneault, Delphine Abadie et William Sacher, révélant les agissements hautement critiquables des sociétés minières et pétrolifères canadiennes en Afrique. Les multinationales minières canadiennes Barrick Gold (premier producteur d’or mondial) et Banro poursuivent la maison d’édition ainsi que les trois auteurs pour diffamation en leur réclamant un total de 11 millions de $ canadiens, dans ce qu’il y a lieu de qualifier de poursuites-bâillon (appelées Slapp en anglais). Le procès est prévu pour cet automne. Derrière ce procès, ce sont la liberté d’expression, le droit à l’information, le droit à la participation au débat public sans intimidation et la possibilité de publier des travaux de recherches de qualité et sans complaisance, qui sont remis en cause. Afin de soutenir (http://slapp.ecosociete.org/) les auteurs et la maison d’édition, et pour contribuer à lever le voile sur les agissements des entreprises minières sur la planète, Mouvements publie un entretien de William Sacher, réalisée dans le cadre du projet Écho des Alternatives ( www.alter-echos.org ) qui explique comment le Canada est devenu un véritable « paradis judiciaire et réglementaire » pour les entreprises minières. Il contribue ainsi à une « nouvelle ruée minière » visant à satisfaire les besoins croissants en matières premières de nos modèles de consommation, sans tenir compte des conséquences environnementales, sociales et démocratiques sur les populations directement impactées par l’extraction. Là où, au contraire, un « changement de paradigme civilisationnel » serait nécessaire.
