Fournir un accès par sujet multilingue à leurs catalogues est devenu pour plusieurs bibliothèques nationales européennes un enjeu important. Avec le développement du Web, qui permet à n’importe qui de faire une recherche dans n’importe quel catalogue en ligne, l’accès thématique assuré par un langage documentaire monolingue dans la plupart des bibliothèques nationales européennes constitue un obstacle important à une recherche documentaire efficace. Conscientes de cette lacune et voulant profiter de la richesse des réseaux et de la disponibilité de plusieurs langages documentaires, quatre bibliothèques nationales ont lancé le projet MACS (Multilingual Access to Subjects) sous l’égide de la CENL (Conférence des bibliothèques nationales européennes) en 1998. Cet article décrit la stratégie du projet MACS pour développer, dans un premier temps, un accès par sujet multilingue grâce à l’établissement de concordances (mapping) entre les vedettes des langages documentaires suivants : RAMEAU (Bibliothèque nationale de France), LCSH (British Library) et SWD (Deutsche National-Bibliothek et Bibliothèque nationale suisse). Nous expliquerons comment cette approche a été développée et sur quelles bases les liens entre les vedettes des différents langages documentaires sont créés.
