Les nouveaux capteurs satellitaires à haute résolution génèreront des images monochromes lorsqu'ils opéreront dans leur mode de résolution spatiale la plus élevée. Ainsi, les algorithmes conventionnels d'interprétation d'image comme la classification par maximum de vraisemblance atteindront leur limite d'efficacité en raison du manque de dimensionalité spectrale de ces derniers. Pour pallier cette lacune, il faudra développer de nouvelles méthodes d'extraction d'information sur les formes et les objets basées principalement sur le raisonnement spatial et contextuel. Dans cette optique, un système d'essai a été développé pour évaluer l'utilité de différentes combinaisons d'attributs spatiaux/spectraux/contextuels dans le cadre de la reconnaissance de formes communes comme les routes et les bâtiments. Une approche par objectif basée sur la formulation de règles est proposée pour analyser les rendus segmentés d'images dans le contexte de la délimitation de ces objets et de la saisie de leurs caractéristiques cartographiques. Des détails sur la segmentation, le traitement des attributs, le traitement de la réalité de terrain et la formulation des règles sont présentés. À partir de photographies aériennes à résolution de deux mètres, des modules de reconnaissance par exemple sont développés et évalués en aide à la reconnaissance des rues résidentielles.
