Authenticity is the driving value of the heritage industry. It helps validate such aspects of our collective heritage as national parks, historic sites, anthems and folk songs, and cultural mores. However, with historic sites, and especially restorations and reconstructions, authenticity is often confounded with exactness or historical accuracy. Such notions are problematic in part because the past, in all its detail, cannot be recovered. More important, such a view of authenticity runs counter to how people seem to experience their collective past. Rather than seeing authenticity so rigidly, this article suggests that authenticity is best understood as a negotiated value. The concept of dissonance helps in this understanding. Dissonance can reflect discrepancies between different interpretations of the past, but is more centrally derived from disagreements over what people (and whose values) are admitted into the collective identity. Using a case study of one historical reconstruction in southwestern Ontario, this article argues that the authenticity of the past experienced at heritage sites is a dissonant, or perhaps subjective, value. Not only is authenticity negotiated, but the outcome of the negotiation is contingent on the sentiments, feelings, and expectations that participants draw from within their own sense of the past, and projects as shared values. L'authenticité représente la force agissante de l'industrie liée à notre patrimoine. Elle nous aide à prouver la justesse de tels sujets liés à notre patrimoine collectif, notamment les parcs nationaux, les lieux historiques, l'hymne national et les chansons folkloriques ainsi que les mœurs culturelles. Toutefois, dans le cas des lieux historiques et plus particulièrement avec les restaurations et les reconstructions, le principe d'authenticité est souvent confondu avec la définition de précision ou d'exactitude historique. De telles idées sont problématiques car le passé, dans tous ses petits détails, ne peut être récupéré. De façon plus importante, une telle vision de l'authenticité est contraire à la façon à laquelle les personnes semblent envisager leur passé collectif. Plutôt que de voir l'authenticité d'une façon si rigide, cet ouvrage propose que l'authenticité est mieux appréciée en terme de valeur négociée. Le concept de la dissonance facilite une telle compréhension. La dissonance peut refléter des divergences entre les différentes interprétations du passé, mais elle est fondée, dans une plus grande mesure, sur les désaccords par rapport à la question de savoir quelles personnes (et leurs valeurs) font partie de l'identité dans son ensemble. À l'aide d'une étude d'un cas de reconstruction dans le sud-ouest de l'Ontario, le présent ouvrage soutient que l'authenticité du passé que l'on retrouve dans les lieux historiques constitue une valeur dissonante, ou même subjective.
