Napoléon Bonaparte appartient à cette génération d’hommes des Lumières nourris d’une culture antique qui a été largement sollicitée pour fournir des modèles politiques dans une Europe en révolution. Bien que n’ayant jamais appris le grec, il a beaucoup lu, en traduction, les auteurs grecs, à commencer par Plutarque dont les Vies l’ont accompagné au long de sa vie. Comme son maître Rousseau, il est davantage alors séduit par le modèle de Sparte que par celui d’Athènes, ce que confirme ensuite son analyse des vertus militaires des deux cités. Dans sa jeunesse, il identifie volontiers la Grèce à son île natale et recherche dans les cités grecques un modèle de gouvernement pour la Corse. Ses lectures d’exil témoignent aussi de cet attrait pour la Grèce ancienne. Elles le replongent dans un environnement militaire qu’il affectionne et lui permettent de réfléchir à sa propre épopée. Enfin le modèle de la Grèce antique est sollicité dans le projet de construction européenne qu’il formule à Sainte-Hélène. Ainsi les échelles ont changé, de la Corse à l’Europe, mais la Grèce reste une référence pour Napoléon jusqu’au terme de son existence.
