Cet article propose une analyse queer de l’un des personnages les plus significatifs de l’opéra baroque, Orphée, à travers des oeuvres lyriques de compositeurs comme Peri, Caccini, Monteverdi, Landi, Rossi, Louis Lully, Telemann et Gluck. Dans un premier temps, on observera comment le matériau mythique puisé dans Ovide et Virgile est resserré et moralisé afin de se couler dans les convenances du genre lyrique. La violence à l’encontre des femmes, ou exercée par elles, tout comme la bisexualité d’Orphée sont voilées mais subsistent à l’état de sous-texte intelligible. Elles servent d’ailleurs à construire Orphée en tant qu’« homme », pour reprendre la position de Wittig. Dans cette « technologie du genre » (T. de Lauretis), les dénouements heureux ou malheureux des opéras orphiques éclairent les représentations hétérosexuelles ou homosexuelles du personnage, depuis le néo-platonisme de la Renaissance jusqu’aux Lumières. Aujourd’hui, les interprétations scéniques de ces opéras mettent en œuvre une véritable « performance de genre » (J. Butler) de par la multiplicité des tessitures attribuées à Orphée (baryton, ténor, alto ou soprano castrato, mezzo-soprano féminin et contre-ténor) et l’éventualité du travesti. L’actuelle compétition entre les chanteuses et les chanteurs pour le rôle-titre de l’opéra de Gluck se fonde sur une méconnaissance de la place des femmes dans les distributions de l’époque baroque et sur la construction d’un véritable mythe à partir de la figure historique du castrat. Quoi qu’il en soit, les opéras orphiques du répertoire offrent encore un terrain propice pour faire entendre des voix subversives.
