Résumé L’auteur, à travers une analyse de la mobilité en fauteuil roulant, s’interroge sur la distinction – issue de l’opposition historique de deux modèles du handicap, d’un côté un modèle individuel, de l’autre un modèle social – entre l’expérience singulière et l’expérience sociale du handicap. En s’intéressant à l’interaction entre la personne et son fauteuil, elle montre qu’il existe une continuité dans l’expérience de la personne : sa mobilité (sa forme et son étendue) résulte d’un processus d’adaptation réciproque avec son fauteuil et son environnement, qui engage son corps. Dans ce processus, le statut du fauteuil (comme objet incorporé ou extérieur) et l’espace (social et physique) de circulation de la personne sont corrélativement et progressivement définis. L’analyse de ces processus de co-définition est importante, car elle permet d’identifier la diversité des ressources – autre personne, objets, aménagement urbain ou du bâti, service, etc. – sur lesquelles s’appuient les personnes pour circuler et agir en fauteuil roulant, dans différents espaces, privés ou publics.
