The dynamics of a cantilevered pipe conveying fluid is discussed with a focus on the inverse problem, that is, when the pipe is aspirating rather than discharging fluid. The convoluted history of the understanding of the dynamics of this system is outlined. This history is similar to that of the inverse (or “reverse”) sprinkler problem and concludes that aspirating cantilevers experience flutter, similar to aspirating sprinklers experiencing rotation. Some new experiments on the sprinkler problem are described in which reverse rotation is commonly observed, but forward rotation and a quasi-stationary condition are observed occasionally.
