Nous essayons de dégager quatre niveaux d’analyse propres à définir une sémiotique, en ayant plus spécifiquement en vue la sémiotique des images. À un premier niveau, une image peut être comprise comme une composition de parties, la rhétorique jouant sur les déplacements et condensations que cette structure autorise. À un deuxième niveau, l’image offre des faits de liaison, d’une tout autre nature, dont nous illustrons quelques possibilités et que nous cherchons à comprendre en la comparant avec la prédication linguistique. Ces deux niveaux entrent plus ou moins en résonance avec des hypothèses de nature ontologique qui forment un troisième niveau. Ce dernier point se comprend mieux si l’on remarque que, quelle que soit l’ontologie postulée, il s’agit finalement de comprendre comment des multiplicités peuvent être données dans des unités, ce qui, en un certain sens, est aussi un problème de liaison. Finalement, nous essayons de montrer pourquoi toute image s’inscrit dans ce que l’on peut appeler une économie. Quatre niveaux d’analyse se dégagent ainsi : des compositions méréologiques, des liaisons prédicatives, des horizons ontologiques et une économie.
