Abstract

Abstract Planning of software releases is accomplished by the assignment of requirements to the releases, where effort, finance, and risk constraints are considered in order to determine strategic release plans. Planning and re‐planning of releases has an impact on time‐to‐market, customer satisfaction, and stability of the development process. This article presents an industrial case study of the release planning process improvement as performed at Trema Laboratories, Inc. The baseline situation is compared against the improvement gained from the introduction of a more systematic process defined by a decision support tool called ReleasePlanner, and an accompanying methodology. The new process was designed and implemented as part of a trial project performed at Trema. The article describes the main findings of this trial. The study shows that the process improvement introduced has added significant value to the overall business. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
