Dans cet article, on évalue le potentiel des photographies aériennes à haute résolution et des images panchromatiques à résolution moyenne de SPOT et de Landsat TM pour la détection des réseaux routiers dans différents environnements tels que les régions rurales agricoles et forestières, les centres-villes et les zones résidentielles. L'algorithme d'analyse de profil GDPA (Gradient Direction Profile Analysis) est utilisé pour tester l'efficacité de la détection des routes et les résultats sont comparés. Dans les zones rurales et forestières, les réseaux de routes détectés à partir de toutes les sources de données sont relativement bons et comparables parce que les routes constituent des formes distinctives dans ces images. En zone urbaine, tous les résultats obtenus dans les centres-villes sont faibles dû à la nature complexe des scènes. Dans les zones résidentielles, les résultats sont plus diversifiés en fonction des sources de données qui proposent des résolutions différentes. Parmi les trois types de données utilisés pour les zones urbaines résidentielles, les photographies aériennes numérisées ont donné la meilleure carte du réseau routier. L'image SPOT a produit des résultats adéquats, avec une performance meilleure dans les zones de développement routier récent. L'image Landsat TM donne des résultats faibles. Nos expériences montrent que l'efficacité et le degré de difficulté de l'extraction des formes linéaires à partir d'images de télédétection dépendent grandement de la nature des données, et en particulier, de la résolution spatiale et de l'environnement local.
