Des récits du XIX c et XX c siècles sur la capture, le transport et l’entretien des animaux exotiques, et de nouvelles données zooarchéologiques provenant de sites d’Italie et d’Afrique du Nord jettent une nouvelle lumière sur ses activités à l’époque romaine. II en ressort qu’elles étaient beaucoup plus difficiles et dangereuses que ne le laissent entendre les textes anciens et les œuvres d’art. Une approche multidisciplinaire, combinant zooarchéologie, ethnographie, histoire, étude des textes anciens et iconographie. éclaire les méthodes utilisées par les Romains et les problèmes qu’ils rencontraient dans leur recherche d’animaux sauvages pour satisfaire les besoins de l’amphithéâtre et du cirque.
