Cet article interroge les discours des chercheurs qui mettent de l’avant, depuis les décennies 2000 et 2010, l’idée que le Web serait constitué par une « participation » des internautes au monde numérique. Mais qu’entendons-nous par l’expression « participation » : ne s’agirait-il pas d’une simple illusion, d’une ruse sémantique des puissants de ce monde pour exploiter plus subtilement leurs subordonnés ? Ou, au contraire, ce type d’interpellation pourrait-il conduire à distribuer plus démocratiquement la capacité d’agir vers des agents a priori éloignés des centres du pouvoir ? Participer suppose que l’individu prenne part à la situation de façon telle qu’il puisse éventuellement modifier cet état des choses par ses gestes contributifs. L’insistance rhétorique des analystes à constater l’existence de cette « participation » n’équivaudrait-elle pas à faire le jeu des grandes entreprises de l’Internet ? Aujourd’hui, une logique d’extraction de données qui fonctionne complètement à l’insu des personnes dont les traces d’activité font l’objet de la captation se met en place. Ces processus de captation permanente de la présence ouvrent la porte à une marchandisation permanente du temps humain et à l’implantation de nouveaux dispositifs de monétisation de l’attention.
