Comment les enseignants au lycée et à l'université se répartissent-ils les classes et enseignements ? Je m'intéresse dans cet article à un aspect de la division du travail enseignant, la répartition des services, et aux résultats de cette division sur la définition des contenus d'enseignement. Le service des enseignants de lycée et d'université forme le cadre pratique de leur activité et a des conséquences directes sur leur travail, notamment sur la manière dont ils préparent et assurent leurs cours, donc sur les savoirs qu'ils vont présenter. Cet article s'appuie sur une enquête réalisée dans une grande ville de l'ouest de la France, dans deux lycées et dans les Unités de Formation et de Recherche de sciences et de sociologie de l'université de cette ville. Les cours dans deux disciplines scolaires (sciences économiques et sociales, et physique-chimie) et dans trois disciplines universitaires (physique, chimie, sociologie) ont été observés pendant trois ans.
