The academic reward system encourages scholars to selectively collect and analyze data in a search for statistically significant (p < .05) findings to accumulate articles in prestigious journals. Evidence suggests that such “p-hacking” is endemic throughout science, and work has begun to reveal the extent of this phenomenon in management journals as well. We advance this work by examining p-hacking in two prestigious management journals: AMJ and ASQ. We show that empirical distributions of statistical significance in these journals exhibit too many just-significant (.04 < p < .05) and too few just-below-just-significant (.03 < p < .04) hypothesis tests, and provide arguments and evidence regarding which particular articles are most likely to reflect this behavior.
