En raison d’un sentiment d’illégitimité à vivre, de difficultés à braver les normes et de l’effritement du capital de résilience face aux rejets et discriminations, des personnes trans de tous âges et de tous milieux renoncent à la vie en se suicidant. D’autres sont assassinées et viennent allonger la liste des victimes de transphobie. Ces personnes font l’objet de réassignations post-mortem, dont on trouve des traces depuis le iv e siècle. Le sujet demande d’être abordé avec précaution car ces expériences de vie sont liées au genre et plus précisément au franchissement de genre, pour des personnes qui correspondent peut-être aux cas de figure que l’on comprend au xx e siècle sous le terme transgenre. Dans cet article, nous nous proposons d’interroger des franchissements de genre à travers les âges en mesurant les effets des réassignations post-mortem, voire des effacements, à l’aide d’exemples. Les réassignations et leurs conséquences seront aussi décrites et analysées à partir de contenus identifiés dans les médias contemporains, particulièrement quand la mort de personnes trans est traitée dans le registre du fait divers et quand le genre devient un outil de mise en scène. La proposition d’ouverture à l’intersectionnalité a pour objectif de montrer que le traitement médiatique et les réassignations post-mortem révèlent la persistance des inégalités parfois même sous de nouvelles formes.
