Conforme aponta Kant, no prefácio da primeira edição da CRP (1781), ainda que a razão reflita, por um lado, a impossibilidade de se esquivar para sempre de um gênero de questões, por outro, exige que as mesmas sejam respondidas e investigadas. Isto é, impelida por si própria, a razão se vê enredada em questões metafísicas, das quais precisa dar conta como parte de sua tarefa. Nesse sentido, ela tem de atender a certas necessidades puramente racionais, para além do domínio cognitivo. As investigações metafísicas trazidas pelo racionalismo e pelo empirismo não alcançaram a solidez almejada para a razão filosófica, pois, enquanto ainda insuficientes metodicamente, o primeiro fazia afirmações sem fundamento e o segundo colocara em xeque as bases da própria razão. Para resolver as questões nesse campo de batalhas, Kant inicia a CRP propondo refletir e espelhar-se no método empregado pelas ciências que obtiveram sucesso (lógica, matemática e física), buscando imitá-las. Assim, cogita-se como sendo também produtivo a razão, na solução dos conflitos interiores gerados por questões que se impõem necessariamente a ela, essa alteração de método que se denomina revolução copernicana. Parece que deste modo são suspensos o caráter paradoxal e o clima de querela interminável, desde as consequências extraídas, para o todo da razão, da aplicação da revolução copernicana à metafísica (filosofia). Pois graças a isso é que a razão desperta para o caráter genuíno e legítimo da necessidade presente nela, de encaminhar respostas às questões que nascem em seu interior.
