Kentlerdeki nüfus artışı yaşam kalitesinin düşmesine ve bireylerin ihtiyaçlarının gerektiği gibi karşılanamamasına neden olmaktadır. Bu olumsuz koşullardan en çok etkilenen kesim ise hareket kısıtlılığı yaşayan engelli bireylerdir. Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (DSÖ) verilerine göre dünya nüfusunun 1 milyardan fazlasında çeşitli engellilik durumu bulunmakta, Birleşmiş Milletler Kalkınma programına göre bu engellilerin %80’i gelişmekte olan ülkelerde yaşamaktadır. Türkiye’de ise Ulusal Engelli Veri Tabanına göre (Mayıs 2022) nüfusun %2,97’sinin yani 2,5 milyon engelli birey olduğu belirtilmektedir. Ülkemizdeki engelli bireylerin önemli bir kısmını (%13,78) ortopedik engelli bireyler oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışmada; evrensel tasarım ilkeleri ışığında tekerlekli sandalye kullanıcısı bireylerin çalışma ve sosyal hayatlarında işlerini kolaylaştıracak çalışma masası tasarımı gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bunun için Ghani ve diğerleri ile Cheng-Lung Lee’nin çalışmaları ve TS 9111 ile “City Of Toronto Accessibility Design Guidelines, 2004”deki ölçümler dikkate alınmıştır. Masa tasarımında temel olarak çalışan tekerlekli sandalye kullanıcısı bireyler hedeflenmiş olsa da yaşlılar ve farklı engele sahip bireyler için de organize edilebilecek demonte bir yapı düşünülmüştür. Tasarlanan model, piyasada satılan masa modelleri incelenerek, bu modellerden farklı olacak şekilde geliştirilmiştir.
