Abstract
Os termos “cor” e “preto e branco” sugerem uma dialética de oposição simultânea e de difícil complementaridade, já que branco e preto também podem ser vistos como “cores”, assim como sua suposta “oposição” em relação à cor pode ser vista como um truque de linguagem, de ideologia ou de história. No cinema, é claro, o monocromático foi durante muitas décadas a regra contra a qual o filme colorido se definiu, seja como um sinal de exuberância e/ ou fantasia tecnológica, ou como algo adjunto à reprodução realista de um mundo que supomos ser colorido. Disparidades entre cores frequentemente supersaturadas de maneira grosseira na tela e a sutileza real dos tons naturais poderiam ser ridicularizadas como algo kitsch ou (com menos frequência) relevadas como o inevitável tributo da arte à convenção. Que o branco e o preto sejam considerados como cores ou como prelúdio e epílogo das cores é uma questão irrelevante, apesar de sua ausência do espectro ou do fato das cores dos objetos só se tornarem visíveis depois que sua iluminação alcança um limiar mínimo capaz de revelar apenas suas formas.
