Dans le domaine des mathématiques, les écrits scientifiques se rapportent essentiellement à deux perspectives distinctes concernant la problématique des difficultés d’apprentissage. La première perspective, qui regroupe principalement les personnes chercheuses issues des sciences cognitives, est essentiellement centrée sur l’identification et la description de dysfonctionnement propres à l’élève (Rajotte, 2014). Par ailleurs, les tenants de la seconde perspective, principalement rattachés au champ de recherche en didactique des mathématiques, s’intéressent plutôt au fonctionnement du système didactique afin d’expliquer dans quels contextes émergent les difficultés d’apprentissage (Giroux, 2010). Bien que les débats scientifiques dans le domaine aient majoritairement opposé les tenants de ces deux perspectives interprétatives, depuis les dernières années, des personnes chercheuses associées à une troisième perspective se sont jointes à la discussion concernant l’interprétation des difficultés d’apprentissage (Rajotte et al., 2020). En complémentarité avec les fondements propres à la didactique des mathématiques, la posture adoptée par les tenants de cette troisième perspective, essentiellement associée aux sciences sociales, met en lumière l’importance d’adopter un point de vue anthropologique permettant de considérer des variables culturelles dans l’explication des difficultés des élèves en mathématiques. Ce texte réflexif vise à soutenir le développement de l'éducation inclusive en mettant en lumière les différents enjeux, les défis et les liens qu’entretient chacune de ces trois perspectives interprétatives des difficultés d'apprentissage en mathématiques dans leur rapport à la diversité.
