Abstract

Buildings have been identified as a global priority for decarbonization; within these, hospitals are particularly high carbon emitters due to their indoor environmental requirements. Several scholars have used artificial intelligence techniques to predict and optimize hospital energy consumption. Key findings from the literature review were the dominance of Artificial Neural Networks, followed by Support Vector regression and increasing use of deep learning, the need for improved computational efficiency to enable implementation, and a common set of core features (temperature, relative humidity, date, time, and day of the week (including holiday status)). Research gaps include a lack of algorithm performance comparison across hospital buildings, limited prediction use to support system optimization, and limited incorporation of real-time data.
