Les bénévoles sont présents dans toutes les sphères de la société québécoise, de l’accompagnement des malades à la collecte de fonds pour les organismes caritatifs, des comités de parents dans les écoles à divers conseils d’administration, de la tenue d’événements culturels à l’organisation des sports et des loisirs. Bien peu d’organismes communautaires pourraient s’en passer ; les gouvernements les ont même intégrés à leur réseau de services. Mais qu’est-ce qui rassemble sous la même bannière – le bénévolat – des activités aussi diverses ? À quoi reconnaît-on une action bénévole et quelle place le bénévolat occupe-t-il dans notre société ? La question de l’origine et de la nature du bénévolat est au centre de cet ouvrage, qui analyse la manière dont le secteur bénévole s’est progressivement formé, le sens que l’on a donné à ces actions, ainsi que les raisons pour lesquelles des personnes d’horizons différents s’y investissent. Le bénévolat, tel qu’on l’entend aujourd’hui, n’a pas toujours existé. Il s’est développé en même temps que les mentalités, les modes de vie et le travail se sont transformés, que l’Église puis l’État furent amenés à jouer de nouveaux rôles dans la société québécoise. Loin d’être la survivance des pratiques d’entraide traditionnelles, il est étroitement lié à la modernité et à l’histoire récente du Québec. La première partie de cet ouvrage retrace son apparition progressive et ses transformations au long de plus d’un siècle. La seconde partie est consacrée au bénévolat actuel. Cet ouvrage s’adresse aux bénévoles et aux gestionnaires d’organismes bénévoles, aux chercheurs ainsi qu’à toute personne intéressée par les questions de solidarité, d’engagement et de dons.
