Abstract
At the World Federation of Occupational Therapists Congress in Canada in 1998, Dr Elizabeth Yerxa (2000b) asked, “How does each human learn the skills required to pursue our interests, achieve our goals, survive, contribute and find our own unique place within our culture?” (p. 91). This prescient question is as timely and relevant now as it was 25 years ago, particularly as it relates to the reported worldwide crisis in youth mental health. In this tribute, Dr Yerxa’s framing of this question provides a powerful occupational lens through which to understand the youth mental health crisis; and informs much of my current research, including the creation of Everyday Matters: Healthy Habits for University Life®, a novel time use and well-being programme for college students in Ireland.
