Abstract
Indonesia merupakan negara kepulauan terbesar di dunia yang terdiri dari kurang lebih 17.500 pulau dengan garis pantai sepanjang 81.000 km serta luas lautan 5,8juta km2 atau meliputi 60% dari total luas wilayah negara Indonesia. Bengkulu merupakan salah satu kota yang terletak di pesisir barat Pulau Sumatra, Indonesia. Letak wilayah yang sebagian besar menghadap ke Samudera Hindia dengan panjang pantai mencapai 525 km, menyebabkan Provinsi Bengkulu memiliki luas Laut Teritorial sebesar 53.000 km2 dan luas Zona Ekonomi Eksklusif (ZEE jarak 12-200 mil laut dari pantai) mencapai 685.000 km2. Keanekaragaman bawah laut yang dimiliki pulau-pulau di Bengkulu perlu mendapat perhatian khusus, mengingat beberapa keadaan yang memprihatinkan. Pengetahuan umum bagi masyaraka akan kekayaan kelautan Indonesia diperlukan supaya masyarakat tidak hanya merusak melainkan melestarikan. Guna memenuhi kebutuhan manusia akan pengetahuan kelautan diperlukan suatu wadah yang memungkinkan manusia untuk melihat dan mempelajari perilaku habitat dan biota laut secara langsung. Salah satu fasilitas yang memenuhi persyaratan tersebut adalah Oceanarium. Oceanarium akan dibangun di Pulau Tikus Bengkulu dengan obyek pamer menuju bawah laut tanpa mengubah ekosistem yang ada. Bengkulu Oceanarium akan menjadi salah satu tempat wisata baru di Bengkulu yang akan menarik para pengunjung guna meningkatkan pendapatan daerah.
