Abstract
It is not easy to incorporate good mathematical figures in mathematical exposition—which is to say that the revolution in mathematical typesetting brought about by Donald Knuth’s invention of T E X has not yet been matched by one in mathematical illustration. Curiously, at the same time Knuth gave us T E X he also gave us the graphics language METAFONT, but this has never enjoyed anywhere near the popularity of TEX itself. There are many reasons why mathematical illustration is difficult. One’s first impression is probably that the main difficulties are simply technical and that just around the corner will appear the perfect software tool.
