In El oto?o del patriarca, Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez deploys Biblical subtexts to underscore power of visual tropes in establishment and maintenance of political authority. In so far as both dictator and in novel perceive patriarch through prism of Old and New Testaments (the Biblical connotations of his designated title being inescapable), ruler and ruled are shown to be implicit collaborators in construction of dictator s absolute power. The construction of authority according to Biblical models has important ramifications for our understanding not only of dictator's rise to power, but also of way in which his subjects interpret his and their story. The latter, in a manner consistent with Biblical prophecy-narratives and apocalyptic literature, follow their leader blindly, thereby collaborating in establish ment of his authority. The pseudoor quasi-Biblical nature of this unwritten contract one might almost say covenant between ruler and subjects sheds light, finally, on nature of political authority in aftermath of Latin American independence, and on role which the people played in establishing and sustaining that power. The collective narrator-witness, who appears as we at beginning of each of novel's six chapters, six times discovers dead body of dictator. This reiterated revelation of patriarch's corpse initiates telling of different episodes of his life, in a temporal order that is key to understanding construction of absolute power. The narrative we of Garc?a M?rquez's novel is not an innocent witness. On contrary, (as they are embodied in, or represented by, collective narrator) actively participate in construction of patriarch's myth of authority, just as they that is, their voice participate in realization of text. The collective narrator-witness focalizes, in this testimony, patriarch's messianic actions, thus providing reader with insight into dictator's relentless effort to maintain power. In their witnessing, reflect, on more than one level by proxy, that is, as well as in their own right rhetorical energy which goes into construction of power.
