Résumé
Students in Canada and the United States have reason to be saddened at the loss of a great scholar, teacher, Dominican, and friend. Lawrence Dewan was born 22 March 1932 and died in Ottawa, 12 February 2015. The youngest of four children of Philip and Marie Dewan, he is survived by loving nieces and nephews, by whom he is much missed. He passed away peacefully at St. Vincent's Hospital, where he received excellent care, after a struggle with liver and pancreatic cancer. A native of North Bay, Ontario, who grew up in St. John, New Brunswick, Toronto, and Ottawa, Lawrence Dewan completed his B.A. in philosophy and English literature at St. Michael's College, Toronto, going on to complete his M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Toronto in 1955 and 1967, respectively. He made his simple profession with the Order of Preachers in 1973, completing his solemn profession and being ordained a priest in 1976. As a Dominican he studied theology at the Dominican University College, obtaining the B.A. in 1974 and the M.A. in 1976. Fr. Dewan's first full-time teaching post was at the University of Ottawa (1959-65), followed by a post at St. Mary's University, Halifax, Nova Scotia (1967-71), from which he resigned to begin his studies with the Dominicans. Since 1976 until just months before his death, Fr. Dewan taught at the Dominican University College in Ottawa, where he was a central figure in the spiritual and academic life of the college and a beloved brother of the St. Jean Baptiste Dominican Convent, where he lived. He was visiting professor at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, Toronto (1983-89), the Catholic University of America (1990-97), International Theological Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family, Gaming, Austria (2005), and Universite Laval (2010-12). Fr. Dewan received a number of academic honors, including Master of Sacred Theology from the Dominican Order (1998), Member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas (1999), the Lokuang Professorship in Philosophy, Fu Jen Catholic University, Taipei (2003), the Maritain Medal for Scholarly Excellence (2006), the medal filustre Visitante of the Sergio Arboleda University, Bogota, Colombia (2008), and the Capital Educators' Award from the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (2010). Fr. Dewan's preferred written format was the scholarly article, and he wrote more than 110 such pieces, forty of which are published in two excellent collections: Form and Being: Studies in Thomistic Metaphysics (CUA Press, 2006) and Wisdom, Law, and Virtue: Essays in Thomistic Ethics (Fordam, 2008). …
