William G. Dewhurst

The Department of Psychiatry, University of Alberta, was saddened to report at the Annual General Business Meeting of the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CCNP) the death of Dr. William G. Dewhurst, founding vice-president of the CCNP, on April 28, 2001. Bill did his initial medical training at Oxford University and the University of London, interspersed with service in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the Korean War. Developing an interest in psychiatry and neurotransmitters, he moved to the Maudsley Hospital, where in 1961 he received his Diploma in Psychological Medicine (with distinction). During the 1960s, he published a series of elegant papers in the British Journal of Pharmacology, The Lancet, and Nature on the role of trace amines such as β -phenylethylamine and tryptamine in psychiatric disorders and became a leading international authority on this topic. In 1969, he moved to the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Alberta. He became chair of that department in 1975, a position he retained for 15 years. Bill's career in Canada was highlighted by a continuation of his research in neurochemistry and by exemplary service to various funding agencies and learned societies in the field of mental health. In 1979, he co-founded the Neurochemical Research Unit at the University of Alberta, and in 1999, the research laboratories in the Unit were named the W.G. Dewhurst Laboratories in his honour. He served as president of the Alberta Psychiatric Association, the Canadian Psychiatric Association and the CCNP. Bill was also active in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, where he served as examiner and directed reconstruction of the written examination in psychiatry. In 1993, he received the CCNP Medal. After retirement from the University, Bill served on the Board of the Child and Adolescent Services Association (CASA) of Alberta, and while he was president, this organization achieved accreditation. Bill was a quiet, generous and humorous man who loved to read and had a huge home library. He was an outstanding scholar and mentor who built up a very strong Department of Psychiatry and was immensely proud of being a Founding Fellow of the CCNP. Bill had many friends across Canada, earned the respect and loyalty of all those who worked with him and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife Margaret and by his daughter Susan and son Tim and their families. The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Alberta has established a Scholarship fund in his memory, and the CCNP has now named its travel award program for research trainees after him.
