Other Voices, Other Worlds: The Global Church Speaks Out on Homosexuality. Edited by Terry Brown. New York: Church Publishing Company, 2006. ? + 341 pp. $25.00 (paper). It would be no news to readers of the Anglican Theological Review that the relationship between homosexuality and Christian practice is an issue that is presently creating deep divisions within almost every Protestant denomination. Hence, the appearance of this volume of edited essays is a significant contribution to our understanding of the existence of homosexual behavior in a variety of world cultures, and the creative attempts to formulate an inclusive theology that normalizes same-sex behavior as a part of the variety of God's creation. The volume is edited by the Rt. Rev. Terry Brown, Bishop of Malaita-a prominent and vital diocese in the Solomon Islands, in the Anglican Church of the Province of Melanesia. Brown explains that the genesis of this collection was his own shock at the 1998 Lambeth Conference plenary debates and resultant resolution which unambiguously declared all homosexual practice to be incompatible with Scripture and, therefore, a sin, as well as by the media's over-simplification of a presumed split between North versus Anglicanism. Brown's introductory essay is followed by twenty-four individual essays, plus an afterword by Sarah Coakley, then the Edward Malinckrodt, Jr., Professor of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School. The authors of the individual essays claim ethnic identity as Native American, South Indian, Singaporean, Tongan, Maori, Uruguayan, Kenyan, Ugandan, Japanese, Nigerian, Brazilian, South African, Cuban, Hong Kong Chinese, Jamaican, and Sri Lankan, and most are in positions of upper-level administrative responsibility in Anglican dioceses throughout the world. Volumes of edited essays are notoriously difficult to control in terms of both shape and quality. In the case of this volume, the shape carries a commendable logic. Martin Brokenleg sets the stage for the coming contents with his fine essay on the role of two-spirit people among the American Lakota and the deep spiritual respect which is awarded them. The collection's structure then proceeds through a variety of explorations of theology and homosexuality as seen through indigenous eyes, and finishes with several challenging essays about Lambeth, authority, and exegesis by senior ecclesiastical academics from England and Canada. The quality of the collection is somewhat less successful, in that some of the essays early in the volume are the weakest among the collection, so that the reader must persevere further into the volume to find a direct engagement with both the identity and theological issues of gay and lesbian indigenous Anglicans. …
