Résumé
This study aimed to examine the relationship between family functioning and alexithymia in parents of children with recurrent abdominal pain as well as overall psychopathology of the children suffering from recurrent abdominal pain. The basic assumption of this research was that RAP is a syndrome in which different etiologic factors, alone or in interaction, contribute in development of disorder. Fifty parents of the children 6–18 years old participated in the study. Their children were admitted to the pediatric clinic with the diagnosis RAP (recurrent abdominal pain). The control group consisted of fifty parents with healthy children of the same age. Both groups of parents were compared on TAS (Toronto Alexithymia Scale), FAD (Family Assessment Device) and CBCL (Child Behavior Checklist). The results of the study showed that on FAD parents of children with recurrent abdominal pain reported more family dysfunction having significantly higher score on “general functioning” and “problem solving” subscales. On CBCL children with RAP had significantly higher score on several syndrome scales: Somatic Complaints, Anxious/Depressed, Withdrawn, Social Problems, Thought Problems, Attention Problems, Internalized problems and Total problems. Parents of children with RAP were significantly more likely to have alexithymia than parents of the control group as confirmed by significantly higher values on total score of the TAS–20 and subscale “difficulty in describing feelings”. The results suggest that mother's alexithymia and perceived family dysfunction may impair mother's capability to be outside regulator of child affective states thus contributing to the development of somatization and emotional problems in child. Having this in mind the development of “etiology-dependent” therapeutic approach is possible including family therapy, dyadic therapy and individual psychotherapy of parent in dealing with children with recurrent abdominal pain.
