Résumé

récupéré en direct d'OpenAlex

This title may seem contradictory at first glance, for globalization could be viewed as quite the antithesis of traditionality. Such ambiguity led to the 'Crossroads' conference in Ireland almost two decades ago, as a response to frustration that had built up with the move of big business into Irish-Traditional music. That event, and much writing since, did, however, make clear the difference between traditional Irish-Traditional music practices on the one hand, and, on the other, the nature and varieties of that music's performance in the modern world. One therefore expects of this book that it should take things forward from that platform. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The investigative route laid out in the Contents does promise a challenging form of investigzation: the place of 'the Local within the Global', supported by itemization of a complex of 'divides' -- temporal, linguistic, ethnic, geographical, political, and. institutional. The 118,000 words that follow, however, tend to emphasize representation more than globalization, getting to grips with the title only in the conclusion, hilt demonstrating a good sense of change and its nature with regard to mobility and technologies. The thesis is weakened by many tangential divergences (such as an essay on Newfoundland) which, while well informed and interesting in themselves, aren't productively integrated. 'There is some poor referencing and uncritical quoting of weak sources like political PR and Wikipedia. Yet Susan Motherway is not scared to wrestle with ideals and exclusivity, and is in accord with standard awareness that Irish music has many accreted and absorbed outside ingredients. Her core implication is contentious, however: that what we know as Irish-Traditional music is not properly representative of actual traditions on the ground. This, she holds, is on account of ,other ethnicities, which she explores via languages: Irish Gaelic, Hiberno-English, Shelta (of Travelling People), Yola (from Co. Wexford), and, rather oddly, a private language once used by the pop singer Enya which, we are told, even that singer has herself abandoned). This identification of languages is presumed to indicate significant supporting cultures, but since we are also told (for instance) that Travellers' languages are about communication rather than .expressive culture, and are ultimately not part of any national or international song tradition, their relevance to the globalization thesis is not clear. So, too, with Ulster-Scots, of which the author admits that, although the actual [Lowland] Scots language in Ulster does have an historical corpus of verse, the lyric forms of the language are only marginal in actually sung song. Indeed, we are told that song in the Ulster-Scots movement is driven by politically financed invention, led by a 'hillbilly Gospel group'. …
