Parasitical intestinal abnormality in Pontoporia blainvillei (Cetacea, Platanistoidea, Pontoporiidae) of the Rio Grande’s coastal region, RS, Brazil Necropsies, aiming to describe and typify intestinal abnomalities due to the parasitic action of Bolbosoma turbinella Diesing, 1851 (Acanthocephala – Polymorphidae), was done on 12 Pontoporia blainvillei Gervais & D’Orbigny, 1844 killed by incidental capture in the area of Rio Grande-RS, including nine specimens provided to “Elieser de C. Rios” Oceanographic Museum (MOFURG) by the fishing fleet and three animals stranded on the Cassino’s Beach (ca. 32o30’ S, 52o30’ W-33o30’ S, 53o30’ W). Records of the dolphins’s total lenght, weight and sex were done. Samplings of normal and abnormal tissues (to histological comparisons) and of the parasites was effected. Tissues samplings were submitted to the routine following histological protocol to mounting with Canadian balsam. The parasites were maintained on cold water by 24 hours to extroversion of proboscis, subsequently fixed on A.F.A. (Alcohol-Formalin-Acetic acid), stained with Semichon’s carmine, clarified with creosote and mounted in Canadian balsam. Previous studies according length class to the host, appoint the occurrence of lesions on animals with age near or greater to the first year old in this study. Histopathologically, acanthella and adult of B. turbinella was the etiological agents of miofibrinopurulents abscesses on the large intestine of P. blainvillei. The lesion caused by the acanthella reaches all intestinal layers while the lesion of adult form of the parasite reaches the mucosae and submucosae. Significative differences (p < 0.05) between normal and abnormal tissues, were observed on the dimensions of the mucosae, Lieberkuhn’s glands, lymphatic nodules and serosae. The inflammatory process demonstrated by lesions is severe, confirming prior macroscopic diagnosis. However, this work typifies and classifies correctly the lesion.
