Embedding Sustainable Development in Organizations Through an Integrated Management Systems Approach
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Recently, research on organizational SD has begun to shift from why SD should be implemented at the organizational level to how this can be accomplished. In this light, there is a growing stream of research on standardized management systems for SD.The literature www.intechopen.comSustainable Development -Policy and Urban Development -Tourism, Life Science, Management and Environment 322 highlights that one possibility is developing a stand-alone standard for SD.Singh et al. (2007) provide an example of how this may be accomplished. The literature also highlights the possibility of integrating the principles of SD with existing management system standards (MSS), such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001, among others. This research builds on wider research on integrated management systems (IMS).Examples are provided by Rocha et al. (2007) and Oskarsson and Malmborg (2005), among others. However, while much research has been conducted on how SD can be implemented at the organizational level, work remains. This paper contributes to these efforts. The paper argues that an IMS-based approach can be used to embed SD in organizations. The focus on IMS is in recognition of the point that existing MSSs, such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, may provide needed leverage points for integrating SD with mainstream organizational issues. It also recognizes that SD should not be seen as a stand-alone initiative, which may be encouraged through the development of a separate MSS focused on SD.An IMS approach provides opportunities to explicitly link SD with existing organizational goals, policies, programs, processes, procedures, and resources. However, research on the application of an IMS-approach to organizational SD is still in its relatively early stages. While several IMS models have been proposed in the literature, they have not been systematically evaluated with respect to their potential to embed SD in organizations.
