Our Lord Jesus cares deeply for his bride, the Church. He shows that care through the members of the church whom he has spiritually gifted for providing his care The New Testament clearly assigns an official role to elders, but it is clear that the Holy Spirit has also gifted others for the work of pastoral care. The Christian Reformed Church (hereafter CRC) Church Order, in requiring that elders make an annual home visit, developed a system that worked well in a more rural, ethnically homogeneous setting where people grew to know each other from generation to generation Bur that system no longer works in a modern, urban large, ethnically diverse congregation The Reformed Churches, as they understand the Bible, have assigned the task of guarding the spiritual well-being of the congregation to the office of elder There has been a significant shift in the CRC Church Order in the area of pastoral care, and how the church ought to exercise it. A church that is committed to using all the spiritual gifts of all of its members may well be directed by the Holy Spirit to use people other than elders or deacons to do some of the work traditionally assigned to these offices This project develops a practical guide to setting up a system of lay pastoral care workers in the local church. These lay pastoral care workers are not spiritual counselors, liar are they expert- in social work psycho-therapy, family counseling etc. They are Christ's ambassadors on behalf of the local church to show Christ's care for the members and adherents of the church This paper comes out of a seven-year trial period at First CRC of London, Ontario, in which dozens of elders and pastoral care workers have participated. Lay pastoral care, as such is not a new concept for the CRC~ it has several centuries of history behind it. but performed solely by elders. At First CRC we have developed a pastoral care system that is a biblical adaptation of the Reformed system for the large, modern, urban church God has blessed us.
