Index. $49.63, cloth.William Risch's ambitious book is a cultural history of post-World War II L'viv. city, despite its unremarkable population size or industrial potential, has occupied a very special place in the Soviet geographic imagination. Its position was recognized not only in the popular lore but also by officials at every level of Party and state hierarchy. As Risch points out, this particular status of L'viv was grounded in the city's complex twentieth- century history-its Habsburg and Polish pre-1939 past, and its intimate connection with the peculiar kind of Ukrainian nationalism that had emerged in interwar Western Ukraine and produced the anti-Soviet insurgency of the 1940s.Risch's book starts with the remaking of L'viv into a Soviet Ukrainian city. Ukrainian and Russian connections were emphasized in both the city's past and city's public space: narratives were written while earlier stories were silenced; street names, monuments, and memorials replaced the old ones. With most Jews perishing in the Holocaust and many Poles deported to Poland, the city's population also thoroughly changed. new L'vivians, however, were not an ethnically homogenous community. Tensions abounded, and, according to Risch, they cannot be reduced to a simple Ukrainian versus Russian template. There were Jews, Eastern and Western Ukrainians, Russians, local pre-war Ukrainian intelligentsia and remnants of the pre-war Polish community. Nevertheless, one's position in the local community was far from being determined by one's ethnic origin. As Risch convincingly shows, personal choices, especially regarding ideological allegiance, were far more important for one's career and life chances than belonging to any given ethnic community.According to Risch, L'viv was The Ukrainian not only because of its past and geographic location. L'viv was also a focal point in two communicative channels reaching out of the Soviet Union. first one was with Poland. While part of the socialist camp, in many respects Poland was freer and more exposed to the real West than the Soviet Union was. Because of its proximity to the border, L'vivians could watch Polish TV and listen to Polish radio. Moreover, knowledge of Polish was quite widespread, and Polish books, magazines, and newspapers could be purchased in the city. Some had family connections to Poland while many others dealt with the Polish tourists who became quite a common sight in the city starting in late 1950s. Another important channel linking L'viv with the West was the family connections of many Western Ukrainians with the Ukrainian diaspora not only in nearby socialist Poland and Czechoslovakia but also in North America, Western Europe, and Australia. …
