This thesis analysis upon the opening and the shutting down of Yeompo, its landscape, the life style of Japanese and their economic activities at the port. First, it is the location of the harbor that the reason why Yeompo was opened later than other ports, like Busanpo, Jaepo and was closed earlier than its rival ports is. It was difficult to approach Yempo because the port was located far more distance from Japan than other ports and being located in inland it had some sorts of defense problems. Second, this article examines the landscape of the port, the composition of the family of Japanese residents at the port and their lives in briefly. Yeompo, Jaepo, and Busanpo were similar to their many other things. But Yeompo had a its very distinctive character. The house of Japanese, their public building and Young-cheong unlike Jaepo and Busanpo, are surrounded by castle wall solidly made. The Japanese family lived in Yeompo had a similarity with Choson people’s on its scale. For instance, a family consisted of three or four people (average 3.8 per family) and seemed like to live as a unit of family. Especially, it was nearly filled with 2/3 the eldest son and daughter but there were few younger ones. Maybe it was that the youngest child had been left off in the family list. Furthermore their scales or compositions had probably been not an equal but a different ones. All of these Japanese residents at Yeompo, Jaepo, Busanpo were not families in a direct line. Instead it is confirmed that there had been slavery or servant from Choson as well as Japanese. Third, their means of living and economic activities are scrutinized in this article. It seems that the Japanese lived in Yeompo had taken part in various economic activities such as fishery, agriculture, commercial business. But time after time their activities had become more extensive on both quality and quantity. Most of all, they helped Hoengli Japanese, Sasong Japanese who had sailed for Choson with a view to trade to make a living on their’s income from that work. They were engaged in fishery with their’s own boat or run fish trap. They were also in commercial business with selling and buying about goods or in intermediates between Japanese and Choson merchant. Beside, they engaged in agriculture and extended their farmland through various routs. They were not only under cultivation but also purchased cultivated land or cultivated farmland of Choson people. Significantly, they amassed fortune through annual interest of fifty percent from Choson people. It seems that the Japanese at Yeompo probably lived and worked in restricted range on the early period since they had settled down. But they had been accustomed to daily life of language, culture, law etc in Choson and developed their human relations with Choson people as time as went by. Therefore it had been possible that they had extended their social-economic base and range of daily life. Choson dynasty gradually reinforced supervision about Japanese because the government should not watch the development of the events. So there had been conflicts between Choson and Japan in trade, foreign affairs and military problems. This seems to be the reason that there had been several times of Japanese invasion on Choson since 15th century.
