Index. $25, paper.Several studies in English have been published in recent years on Central European cinemas, and Polish cinema in particular. One of the most recent additions this burgeoning field of study is in Polish Cinema, written by Ewa Mazierska and Elzbieta Ostrowska, and published by Berghahn Books. Mazierska, Reader in Contemporary Cinema at the University of Central Lancashire, and Ostrowska, who teaches in the Film Studies program at the University of Alberta, are certainly very well-qualified write such a book. Both authors are natives of Poland and familiar with the political and cultural contexts of Polish cinema. In their previous publications they often analyzed gender issues, in particular the representation of women in Polish cinema. They established themselves in the English speaking world as expert voices on the subject, with numerous important publications on Polish cinema.Several chapters in in Polish Cinema appeared previously, sometimes in slightly different versions, in different journals. authors rightly state in the introduction that to women's issues in Polish cinema in a comprehensive way it is necessary go beyond the level of textual analysis and situate the film within a broader system of representation in Polish culture (p. 5). Also in the introduction, they clearly define the objectives of the book, namely examine the main types of female characters in Polish feature and analyze the work of the most prominent Polish women film directors (p. 5). Debating the current state of Polish debates on cinema, they rightly notice the reluctance embrace feminist ideas on the part of both Polish female filmmakers and Polish academics.The book opens with an important historical account of The Myth of the Polish Mother written by Joanna Szwajcowska. She discusses the historical origins of this seminal and lasting emblem of traditional Polish femininity, and provides the historical context necessary for an understanding of this important icon of Polishness.The second part of the book, titled Women According Men, contains six essays dealing with the representation of women in Polish cinema in films made before World War II, as well as contemporary works. In a previously published, often-cited text on the Filmic Representation of the Myth of the Polish Mother, Ostrowska examines the topic by directing particular attention three films: Huragan (The Hurricane, 1928, Jozef Lejtes), Matka krolow (Mother of the Kings, 1982, Janusz Zaorski), and Skarga (The Complaint, 1991, Jerzy Wojcik). …
