this large section of the Middle West than could be accomplished in many years of ordinary study, and they have reached an immeasurably greater number of people. With the International, which the College Art Association brought to the United States for the opening of the new building of the Worcester Museum on January 6, 1933, the Association planned a climax to its exhibition activities. This exhibition, which had its metropolitan showing in New York from February 8 to 26 at Rockefeller Center, contains approximately 350 examples of the work of outstanding contemporary artists. The paintings come from England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Czecho-Slovakia, Russia, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Mexico, Central and South America, Canada, and the United States. It has been, of course, impossible to hold the entire exhibition together with one central idea, for even the ideal of excellence is untenable in the face of many and varied interpretations. The only thing to be done, and this the Committee has attempted, was to conserve a unity of spirit within the group j and the result of this effort, which was persistently maintained throughout some seventeen countries, will be to render each group very different from its neighbor and homogeneous in itself. This cross section will show, not so much different artistic developments, for much interchange of ideas and much rubbing of elbows has somewhat eliminated that, but it will demonstrate the varying points of view from which a definite problem may be regarded and interpreted, and that the chauvinism which seems to be infecting our very daily bread has not passed painting by.
