Résumé
When a friend and colleague dies, a natural first reaction is to focus on the profound loss. Indeed, that is what many of us did when we learned of the sudden passing of Dr Victor Marchessault on March 27, 2003. Canadian paediatrics lost an unwavering advocate and caregiver, the infectious disease community lost a scholar, a family lost a loving father and grandfather, and many of us lost a dear friend. For 33 years, Victor was the heart and soul of the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS), working for much of that time alongside his beloved wife Louise, who passed away in 1993. With an incredible network of contacts and political savvy, Victor moved countless children's issues onto the national agenda, helping to improve the lives of thousands of Canadian children. What a legacy he leaves us. And it is that legacy that we can take comfort in as we learn to live with the loss. Many readers of Paediatrics & Child Health knew Victor in some capacity. Through his work, he touched the lives of countless children, youth and medical colleagues. As head of the CPS from 1964 to 1997, he championed causes such as child abuse, injury prevention, children's rights and immunization. Until his death at the age of 73 years, he was active on so many fronts: Professor of Paediatrics and Infectious Diseases at the University of Ottawa and the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), Chair of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization, President of the Ontario Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, member of the Editorial Board of Paediatrics & Child Health. What you might not know is that Victor really was the founding father of this Journal. The mission of Paediatrics & Child Health – to advocate for the health of all children and youth in Canada and to provide educational material and information to all who deliver health care to children and youth – is Victor's vision of what this Journal should be. Victor Marchessault (1929–2003) Victor and I were colleagues in infectious diseases at CHEO – I was privileged to help recruit him to Ottawa in 1983 – when he approached me about working on a new CPS journal in 1995. He was taking a big risk with an unconventional idea. The concept for Paediatrics & Child Health was not like other medical journals, but he believed that it would help to improve health care for Canadian children and youth. Throughout his life and work, there was never any question that what really mattered to Victor was what was best for kids. Each of us who works on Paediatrics & Child Health hopes that in some measure our efforts help to fulfill Victor's vision. I will miss my friend, but I will always cherish his legacy.
