Winnipeg: Scirocco, 2005. 160 pp. $19.95 sc. Although the question posed by Northrop Frye the 1960s has become a cliche of identity obsession, the eleven radio plays broadcast on CBC Sunday Showcase between 23 January and 27 February 2005 and published the two volume anthology, Where is Here? Drama of Immigration, suggest that the Canadian response is still ambivalent and varied. Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) producer and editor Damiano Pietropaolo posits his preface that they reflect Canada's movement from a pre-national to a post-national consciousness (p. 7), again citing Frye. Pietropaolo simply equates post-nationalism with multiculturalism, but he also claims that CBC radio drama constitutes a national theatre, as was the case the 1940s and 1950s when the CBC was an instrument of culture instituted to unite a widely dispersed population. Pietropaolo also reaffirms the importance of radio drama by quoting David Mamet's contention that it responds to our primal need for participatory (p. 9), again assuming social and cultural commonality the audience. Most of these plays have a heavy autobiographical investment, and many are memory plays--an adult recalling a childhood another place, the memories triggered by a visit necessitated by the illness or death of a parent or grandparent the homeland that results a reassessment of the significance and importance of home. In The Raj Kumair's Lullaby by Indian-born Rishma Dunlop, the death of the narrator's father Montreal 1990 occasions a retrospective narrative which traces the history of her parents' lives India, their emigration to Canada, and her own growing up to adulthood and marriage to a white man, absorbing American popular culture and forgetting her own languages. Although there is some indication of a conflict of cultures, the narrator appears to have harmoniously integrated into society: her cultured, educated, poetic voice reflects a North American upbringing and a way of speaking (p. 15). play closes with a hopeful post-nationalist moral: And the end, immigrants and others the world we call home must invent a history of shared space to dwell in (p. 48). Novena by Marie-Beath Badian also brings into the present the protagonist's family history and her relationship with her father. mnemonic is the father's funeral the Philippines; the Catholic ritual links the family members and provides the daughter Anna with a way of praying for her father and forgiving him and herself for their emotional rift. play's incorporation of liturgy English and Filipino also points to its function as a personal and communal ritual of reconciliation, the solemnity often mitigated by humour. In The Clothesline Caruso narrates her own Italian family history, taking the audience back through three generations, each scene illustrating a period time and a place, with family members describing customs and events. linking device is the clothesline upon which the family washing hangs--in Italy, New York, and finally on the prairie, the clothes signaling the cultural habits and lifestyle as they are described recurrent litanies. Although Donna suggests that her family suffered through hardships, her story concludes with an operatic aria of celebration of her heritage. In Marcia Johnson's Say Ginger Ale a schoolteacher from Toronto visits her sick grandmother Jamaica with her mother for the first time since her emigration as a child. Although she has resisted her Jamaican heritage and affirms her identity, during her visit she learns about the customs of the country, its beauty and its poverty. …
