Résumé
The Veterinary Drugs Directorate (VDD) announced recently that Health Canada has awarded a contract to The Thomsen Corporation of Ottawa, Ontario, for the development, distribution, and analysis of findings from a survey of patterns of veterinary drug use. The survey will assess Extra-Label Drug Use (ELDU) in Canada. Extra-Label Drug Use is defined as the use of a drug product in a manner that is not consistent with what is indicated on the label, package insert, or product monograph of any drug product approved by Health Canada. Health Canada recognizes that ELDU is an important tool in the promotion of animal health when used judiciously. Food safety is vital to Canadians; consequently, livestock producers and veterinarians play a major role in ensuring that safety. Some 3000 veterinary practitioners, animal producers, and allied industries from across Canada will be surveyed. Questions will address a variety of major and minor species' sectors throughout the country. Personal information gathered in this survey will remain confidential and only aggregate data will be used solely to compile the statistics needed to provide a better understanding of this issue. The CVMA encourages all practitioners who will be surveyed to take the time to participate in this important survey. To ensure transparency and opportunities for stakeholder input, the VDD has established an ELDU Steering Committee, which consists of 14 members representing animal industries (dairy, beef, pork, and poultry), the CVMA, the Canadian veterinary colleges, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Its role is to provide expert advice and guidance to assist The Thomsen Corporation and the VDD in this project. The CVMA is represented on the Steering Committee by Drs. Diane McKelvey and Tim Guichon. The information acquired will provide solid and credible information to assist in maintaining access to global markets for Canadian livestock and livestock products; it will also contribute to the evidence-base upon which health benefit/risk assessments are undertaken and risk management strategies and policies are developed.
