Relationship Between Maximal Accumulated Oxygen Deficit (MAOD) and the Wingate Anaerobic Power Test (WAnT)
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The MAOD is purported to be a test of anaerobic exercise capacity while the WAnT is used to asses maximal power rates that can be sustained during anaerobic exercise. The MAOD involves a preparatory test session of at least 30 minutes and then another test session lasting 2-3 minutes while the WAnT lasts only 30 s. Time efficiencies in assessing anaerobic exercise fitness could be gained if one test could be used to reflect both anaerobic capacity and some index of anaerobic power. PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between peak and average power during the WAnT with MAOD in healthy men and women. METHODS: Seventeen participants (10 men, 7 women; mean±SD, 23±3 yr; 171.7±7.4 cm; 70.2±10.4 kg) completed a continuous ramp cycle ergometry protocol to assess VO2max and performed four submaximal rides to determine the regression of steady state VO2 on cycle ergometer power output. Linear regression was used to calculate the power rate associated with 125% VO2max and that rate was used for the MAOD test. The MAOD was calculated as the difference between the calculated O2 demand for exercise until exhaustion at 125% VO2max and actual total oxygen consumed during the MAOD test. WAnT was performed on an electronically braked cycle ergometer using an applied resistance of 0.931 N·kg-1 for men and 0.833 N·kg-1 for women. Power rates during the WAnT were sampled at 50 Hz; mean power was the average over the 30 s duration of the WAnT and peak power was the average of the power during the highest 5 s period. After exercise the subjects immediately moved to a recliner where they remained passive while fingertip whole blood was sampled at 1, 3, and 5 minutes for blood lactate. RESULTS: The absolute MAOD (2.92±1.16 L) was strongly correlated with the 30 s WAnT average power (582±149 W) (r=0.916, p<0.001). After controlling for body mass the MAOD (0.0415±0.0140 L·kg-1) and WAnT average power (8.33±1.48 W·kg-1) remained highly correlated (r=0.895, p<0.001). There was a mean difference of 131±42 s between the MAOD and WAnT in test duration, and mean peak blood lactate levels were different between tests (0.7±1.3 mmol·L-1, p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In light of the strong correlation between the MAOD derived index of anaerobic exercise capacity and the average power from the WAnT, the results suggest that the 30s WAnT can be used to assess both anaerobic power and capacity.
