Résumé
Frank Gunston was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, in 1933. He received a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1957, and worked for two years in this field. He then returned to medical school, graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1963. His internship and residency were at the University of Manitoba, but interspersed during his training were two fellowships of one year and of six months, respectively, with Sir John Charnley in Wrightington, England. During the period from 1967-1969, he developed his concepts of knee arthroplasty and knee kinematics, and performed knee arthroplasty utilizing these new designs that he made himself. His training ended in 1970 with an F.R.C.S. in orthopedics, but he was awarded a McLaughlin Fellowship that enabled him to spend six months with Vainio in Finland and six months with Mueller in Switzerland in 1971. Upon his return, he was in charge of a rheumatoid surgical service at the University of Manitoba. Subsequently, in 1983, he moved to Brandon, Manitoba. In 1984, he was the invited Presidential Guest Speaker at the first meeting of the Knee Society. Gunston and his wife, Sharleen, have two children, John and Jennifer. The facts recounted above do not really describe this pleasant, self-effacing, gentle man who has always placed his family and his patients before fame and fortune. He still makes knee prostheses for his patients in his own shop because of the limited funds available to purchase prostheses. He has an extensive inventory of steam trains and is an avid fisherman. In fact, on one occasion, he preferred fishing to speaking at an orthopedic meeting. Those of us who know him value his friendship greatly.Fig 1: Frank H. GunstonRichard S. Bryan, MD A concept and design of polycentric knee arthroplasty based on the biomechanics of normal knee movement is presented. The diseased articular surfaces of the femoral condyles and tibial plateaus are replaced separately by prosthetic implants secured with cement. The collateral and cruciate ligaments are retained to maintain joint stability. The early results from this arthroplasty in twenty- two knees are assessed. The operation gave relief of pain in twenty-two, a range of movement greater than 90 degrees in thirteen, no lateral instability in sixteen of twenty-two knees and an increased degree of mobility for nineteen of twenty individuals (two bilateral arthroplasties). Operative complications consisted of delayed wound healing in four knees and common peroneal nerve palsy in one. One knee was subsequently arthrodesed for lack of functional improvement.
