Résumé
Dr. Marie-France Demierre, Professor of Dermatology and Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 43 years on April 13, 2010. Dr. Demierre was a nationally and internationally recognized expert in cancers of the skin, including melanoma and T-cell lymphoma. Her expanse of knowledge was unparalleled, and she lectured worldwide on her great passion−the prevention and treatment of skin malignancies. Dr. Demierre was a tireless advocate for, and totally devoted to, her patients, who were among the most complicated cases in dermatology. Her colleagues often commented that a “little bit of her soul was lost” with the passing of any of her patients. She was a superb educator and beloved by her medical students, residents, and fellows. “She walked faster than most people walk and she spoke faster than most people speak because she had so much that she wanted to do and accomplish. She was always the one with the broadest smile and the biggest hug, and was the first on the dance floor at all department and university events. She had a special way of placing her arm around each of us and prefaced all of these warm embraces with her lovely “my dear” that we will always remember.”—Dr. Alani Dr. Demierre received her medical degree from McGill University in 1991, graduated from the Boston University Skin Oncology Fellowship Program in 1996, began directing the Skin Oncology Program at Boston University at age 31 years, and became a Professor of Dermatology and Medicine at Boston University in 2008. She was also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Canada. She had multiple leadership positions in the Melanoma Prevention Working Group, the Women's Dermatologic Society, and the American Academy of Dermatology, among others. She conducted seminal research and wrote numerous commentaries on the dangers of tanning bed use among adolescents, calling for strict government oversight many years before the US Food and Drug Administration held hearings on the same issue. More than 5 years ago, she became the first physician in Massachusetts to testify on the dangers of tanning beds for children, and it now appears that a strong anti-tanning bed bill will pass both houses of the Massachusetts state legislature. Dr. Demierre is survived by her beloved husband Maurizio and her 2 young children: Francoise, age 12 years, and Christian, age 9 years.
