A Specialized Vessel for Specialized Work
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Abstract The Terra Nova Field is situated on the Grand Banks, offshore Newfoundland, some 350 km east-southeast of St.John's. The harsh environment on the Grand Banks and the presence of icebergs, during springtime, made the construction and the development of the Terra Nova field a unique project. This paper addresses the protection and stabilization of pipelines and umbilicals in the field by means of covering them with a berm of well-graded quarry stone. Mobilized for this work was the specialized DPFPV "Seahorse", a dynamically positioned (DP) Fall-Pipe vessel (FPV), operated by Tideway Marine of The Netherlands. Although controlled placement of graded crushed rock for the protection of submarine pipelines is not a common technique in the Western Hemisphere, it is a widely accepted method in other offshore oil and gas regions, such as the North Sea and the Far East. Besides some theoretical background of this technique the actual execution of the work with the "Seahorse" is discussed. Also a brief description of the HSE Performance and the Canadian content on the project are described. 1. PROJECT DESCRIPTION 1.1 Terra Nova Alliance The Terra Nova Alliance was responsible for the design, fabrication, installation and the commissioning of the FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Off-loading Vessel) for first oil, all subsea components and the preproduction wells. Petro-Canada and Coflexip Stena Offshore Newfoundland Ltd. organized all subsea engineering and the installation of the risers and the flexible flowlines as well as the excavation of the Glory Holes (Figure 1). 1.2 Field Lay-out The Terra Nova field is situated on the Grand Banks, offshore Newfoundland, and 350 km east-southeast of St. John's. The water depth is ninety-five (95) meters. The Terra Nova Oil field is developed around the FPSO vessel. Eleven (11) risers and four umbilical risers are connected to the spider buoy at the bottom of the FPSO turret. To prevent iceberg collisions, the FPSO has the capability to disconnect and move away without external assistance, leaving the risers and umbilicals connected to the spider buoy approximately forty (40) meters below surface. Hinge Over Subsea Templates (HOST's) are utilized for subsea development at Terra Nova. The HOST's, including subsea manifolds and Xmas trees are placed in four (4) open Glory Holes (Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest). A fifth glory hole has been excavated and a template set to accommodate future development of the Far East flank. Static flexible flowlines and umbilicals connect the HOST manifolds to the FPSO through the dynamic riser system terminating at the FPSO spider buoy. 1.3 Protection of Flowlines and Umbilicals While it was the original intention to trench all the flowlines and umbilicals below seabed level, it became apparent that difficult soil conditions could slow the work and hamper achievement of the first oil schedule. Therefore it was decided to partially substitute trenching by dumping of a rock berm in those areas where trenching would have been slowed down by very stiff seabed soils.
