PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FROM CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENCE TO ADULTHOOD IN MALES AND FEMALES
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
A physically active lifestyle in childhood and adolescence is believed to contribute to a physically active lifestyle and health in adult years. There is limited support for this contention from longitudinal studies. Although it is important to establish the nature of the relationship of physical activity from childhood and adolescence to adult years, it is equally significant to understand the reasons underlying this relationship. The purpose of this study was to describe the influence of childhood and adolescent physical activity on adult physical activity attitudes and behaviors. Subjects from the Saskatchewan Growth and Development Study (1964–1973) were recruited to participate in a follow up investigation (1997–1998) when the males and females were 40 and 35 to 39 years of age, respectively. From ages 7 to 16, self-report physical activity questionnaires were completed which provided an overall rating for level of physical activity. Subjects were divided into activity groups using a rank order analysis in which the top 25%, middle 50% and bottom 25% were considered active, average, and inactive respectively. One on one, semi-structure, in-depth interviews were conducted with males (n = 16) and females (n = 15). Data was analyzed using thematic analyses separately for the males and females. In the males, “significant others”, “size and maturation”, and “perception of ability” influenced their adult physical activity attitudes and behaviors. In these three themes, there were clear distinctions among the active, average and inactive males. In the females, “transitions”, “body image concerns”, and “significant others” influenced their adult physical activity attitudes and behaviors. There were no clear differences between the active and inactive females in the themes from their childhood and adolescence. All but two of the active women noted a decrease in their level of physical activity in the transition from elementary to secondary school. Most women developed body image concerns in their adult years and used physical activity as a method of weight control. These results suggest that specific relationships, circumstances and perceptions formed in childhood and adolescence had a lasting influence on adult physical activity attitudes and behaviors in males and females.
