Report of the first International Society of Hypertension (ISH) Trainee/New Investigator Symposium

The New Investigator Committee (NIC) of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) hosted the first ever ISH New Investigator Symposium ‘A Global Hypertension Initiative’, on 21 September 2011 in Orlando, Florida, USA at the American Heart Association High Blood Pressure Research Scientific Sessions. This symposium was jointly sponsored by the Inter-American Society of Hypertension (IASH), the American Heart Association's Council for High Blood Pressure Research (CHBPR) and the Council on Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease. Having identified a need for fresh initiatives to develop future leaders in the field of hypertension, the ISH established the NIC to facilitate the involvement of new investigators in hypertension research and to support them in advancing within the field through communication, collaboration and education [1]. A hub of activity for new investigators was established on the ISH website (http://www.ish-world.com/Nin/), Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/ISHNIN) and twitter (http://twitter.com/ISHNIN). As an extension of these activities, the Executive Committee of the ISH supported the NIC in the development of a New Investigators Symposium to be organized and carried out exclusively by new investigators (individuals within 10 years of a doctoral degree or its equivalent). The New Investigator Symposium was a half day event that included both oral and poster sessions aimed at encouraging the participation of new investigators in hypertension and related research. The scientific program consisted of cutting edge research by new investigators worldwide across a range of topics in hypertension. Presentations were selected from abstract submissions with more than 100 abstracts reviewed by new investigators assigned by NIC. The top scoring abstracts received an invitation for oral and poster presentation based on scientific merit. The symposium was introduced by S.H., the current president of ISH along with D.B. of the NIC. Two oral sessions of six presentations followed, with F.C. of NIC and Eric George moderating the first oral session relating to immune and neural contributions to hypertension. P.V. and Catherine Howard moderated the second oral session that consisted of presentations relating to the renin–angiotensin system, oxidative stress and novel therapeutic strategies. There was an enthusiastic discussion among new and established investigators alike. The poster session consisted of 39 top scoring abstracts across a variety of scientific disciplines with the top 13 poster presentations receiving awards on site. The symposium had over 50 participants across nine countries and five continents along with more than 200 attendees, making it a truly ‘global initiative’ which was proficiently conducted for the first time at a major meeting. This achievement would not have been possible without the support, guidance and mentorship of R.M.T., Gabriel Navar, B.C. and S.H.; the superb assistance from ISH and AHA staff (Helen Horsfield, Secretariat ISH; Susan Kunish, Manager, Scientific Conference Programs CHBPR); and the efforts of abstract reviewers, session chairs and poster judges. P.V. concluded the session highlighting the next New Investigator Symposium which will be hosted at ‘Hypertension Sydney 2012’: the 24th Meeting of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) in collaboration with the ninth Congress of the Asian Pacific Society of Hypertension (APSH) and the 34th Annual Scientific meeting of the High Blood Pressure Research Council of Australia (HBPRCA). ISH/NIC is grateful for the enthusiastic participation of presenters and attendees for making it a productive session. We look forward to the next New Investigators Symposium NIC that will take place in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in September 2012. Following on the success of the first symposium, a full day event is planned for our next symposium.
