This paper is the outcome of ongoing research into the urban experience of the upper echelon of the social pyramid in Cyprus during the period of Ottoman rule. The present article focuses on a period of about fifty years, from the last quarter of the eighteenth century up to 1821, a period crucial for Cyprus. Research is based mainly on written sources, mostly unpublished manuscripts, and, to a lesser extent, on artistic representations and the few surviving related artefacts. The study explores the lifestyle and social behaviour of people who could afford to enjoy the 'value of the unnecessary' and indulge in conspicuous consumption far beyond the essentials of daily existence. These people are not representative of the society they lived in; rather, they are exceptional and their way of life reflects foreign influences in developing the highest possible standard of living. More specifically, this work attempts to reconstruct the lifestyle of the wealthy classes living on the island, through the study of different aspects of material culture. The aspects considered as key indicators of lifestyle comprise domestic architecture and household equipment, dietary habits, as well as dress and appearance in general. The subject has never before been systematically investigated in all its parameters. Taking into account that Folk life Studies, particularly in Cyprus, are as a rule concerned with the culture of ordinary people, especially in the countryside, this research offers a new approach to Cypriot folk life and highlights the need for a redefinition of the field.
